Data gone missing:

Medical informatics researcher John Morgan was in the process of analyzing medical data for University of Utah, but realized that much of the medical data at the time was fragmented, incomplete, or missing altogether.

Understanding the problem:

Morgan found that there was no uniformity in the application of coding guidelines by hospitals in the coding of diagnoses and procedures, leading to wildly different and, in some cases, incomplete medical coding.

Addressing the issue:

In 1981 Morgan introduced a digital coding solution that used a series of questions, to guide the coder to more accurate, consistent, and complete records.

The logic tree:

By digitally mapping out uniform paths of logic for the coder to determine accurate codes, Morgan not only found a solution to fuel his research, he created a seismic shift in the way medical coding was performed.

Codefinder:

Not to be confused with an encoder, Morgan’s software filled holes in logic that coding books of the past had not addressed, including the focus on procedural codes, intuitive auto-suggestions and code-based diagnoses.

3M™ Coding and Reimbursement System (CRS):

Now part of the most widely used coding system in the health care industry, the logic tree approach to medical coding is the foundation of 3M Health Information Systems and used thousands of health organizations.

The evolution of CRS:

After more than 35 years of experience and the mentality to always innovate, CRS continues to lead medical coding and reimbursement through regular updates to address the latest compliance standards and industry shifts.

Always innovating:

We’ve set our sights on the next iteration of CRS with 3M™ Coding and Reimbursement System Plus (CRS+), which adds the next generation of coding abilities, including custom edit builds, code prioritization and automated facility values.

    Addressing the issue

In 1982, Morgan introduced a digital coding solution that prompted coders with a series of questions designed to lead them to creating more accurate and complete records. His set of logic trees were based on the way the human brain thinks, rather than on the random codes specified in books. The result: more precise coding and more accurate reimbursement for hospitals.
